April 21 updates!!okay, quick update from the house of duncan!!
after 3 weeks of having the house listed, we are under contract. because we were able to sell by owner, we are not going to have to pay to walk away from the house, since we have only owned it 18 months. we are only guaranteed 18 months for every subsequent assignment, so we aren't going to buy in KS, though rent for our large crew is crazy high. much cheaper to buy there, but then we would have to sell it again.
on the 13th, joshy sustained another head injury. he has just learned to ride his bike on 2 wheels. we were taking a family walk and danny cut in front of him, not maliciously, but it still sent josh into the ditch with the boulders. joshy went over his handle bars and sliced open his head. he bled oh so much, and got 4 staples in his noggin. huge kudos for Central Carolina Hospital!!! they are amazing with children!!
now i am flying to KS to walk through some possible rental homes and spending some time with my parents. i am looking forward to it. i have not had this chance since getting married. i always come with someone else along, so this will be a treat to interact with my folks by myself.
please pray for me, i hate flying!!! and praise God with us for selling the house quickly!! March 31 got the house listed!we have the house listed now, we can relax a bit right?? or not. i have to keep this place show clean till it's sold. i shared some photos of the place. notice how pretty the walls are painted, yes they are pretty aren't they??
anyway, JJ finally stopped throwing up yesterday around 5pm. so i am drowned in laundry, but the house is listed!! and while i was typing this, Joshy got sick right here on the carpet again. another great and wonderful day in our home!! March 30 just one day closer...we are just one day closer to listing the house. yesterday we got the back yard photographed, we refreshed the landscaping in the front, and touched up some more dings that life dealt the walls. today we should have it ready to go.
however, with every step forward there are new challenges to be dealt. last night it was the sudden sickness of the 4 yr old, who did a very good job of running to the bathroom before throwing up. early this morning, the baby picked up his version of the same bug and can't keep anything down aside from water. so offer up prayers for us as we battle the projects that need to be done and keeping up after two sick children. March 25 fort riley, here we come!!i apologize for this being so very boring to read these days!! it seems like we made it home from the holidays and life just turned it up a notch, so i feel like i am trying to catch a train that is swiftly moving away from me.
we got our orders today: fort riley, kansas. we will be arriving in June to begin life again in the midwest. we are going home to our roots and excited about the prospect. it's been too many years away from our families and we are ready to begin building relationships!!
please continue to pray for us as we attempt to sell our home in this current economy and market. and for the children. they are asking daily if we are taking their toys, their clothes, and if we will be making any friends at fort riley. so this will be tough since they are older for this move. thanks!!! December 30 we are home!!we have returned to the sunny and warm state of North Carolina!! the first thing my kids wanted to do was shed their coats and hit the playset! it was nice being in my own bed again and having my tub back. there really is something to coming back home.
it was overall an enjoyable vacation. but missing out on the daily routine of lives and not being around for all the little changes that happen over time left me feeling a slight disconnect. almost like people didn't know how to react to me, just as i didn't always know how to react to them. and there were large groups of my extended family that i didn't get to see. maybe next time. but a whole year away was too much. but we truly do miss our family!! it's very hard missing so much being this far away. December 05 and the storm hits!!i used to wonder why people ignored the tornado warning signs back home in the midwest. but i think i have gained a better understanding this week.
monday morning throughout the wee hours of the morning, the two youngest children began the whole ordeal by throwing up at various times. it lasted several days and the JJ is still not eating well nor is he fully recovered in his diapering area. at the time i thought "oh good, only 2 are sick, no problem." yes, well......
thursday was a busy day! we were going to surprise daddy with an ice cream cake at work when during that drive, bekah became ill. today her tummy is still not fully recovered, but the worst for me hit last night.
because it was my turn!! danny joined me early this morning. so we have a full house of very sick people. tomorrow, 0400, we were planning on heading to the midwest for a much needed vacation and family time!! however, that ETD may get pushed back since some of us can't venture too far from a bathroom. i hate being sick, and it's always harder to handle sick kids when mommy is feeling so dang crummy herself. but i have the added heartache of possibly not heading out in the morning.
i would love extra prayers for a quick recovery of illness here!!! another day of refinement by fire.
James 1:2-4 2 Count it all joy, my brothers,1 when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. November 26 crazy busyIt has been crazy busy here lately. we are getting ready for a long trip to the midwest, preparing for Christmas here at the house as well as securing gifts for the folks back home, and to top it all off, we had a military formal on friday night. it was so much fun celebrating the safe return of a Trans. company from the war zone, and we felt privaledged to partake of that celebration. though sitting at the head table and being introduced was a bit overwhelming. i am not all about the front table. but there were wives that i knew that were lots of fun, so it was good times all around. my chappy hubby broke the ice and dipped into the grog bowl first, just for a taste mind you, and after that we had fun watching folks flock to it and appear like a pack of wolves on a downed doe.
my dress fit so very well (thanks gold's gym) and i found perfect COMFY shoes to wear with it. the ladies were oogling the very pretty dresses, the men were teasing a guy in his ordinance 'pink' mess dress uniform. it was so very much fun!! ben even got a second plate of food after teasing the head chef about his steak being too small. November 14 Quick updatejust updating you all on what's going on here. things have ramped up again getting the house in good order, getting schooling a month ahead for our long trip to iowa in december. we don't want to be too far behind, we need to be done by may to prepare for the move. JJ's hands are healing, but they still look terrible!! i am nervous for scarring. danny's cheap glasses broke again yesterday. bekah is practicing for her ballet show this winter. and the parents are trying to keep their head above water, so to speak.
prayer requests: we have a buddy who just went overseas, we have a friend who just had a baby 2 weeks early, we have loved ones dealing with financial difficulties, we are praying for a preemie who is having a rough go of it (kai), and we have loved ones who need to rely on God's promises more. please pray for these things if you find the time. November 06 the list is out!!!THE LIST IS OUT!!! so now we know where the openings for my hubby's rank are, and so many of our dream sheet are open!!! there are also quite a few openings that we would really love to avoid! so please offer up a prayer for us as the board meets in january to determine assignments. God already knows where we shall be in a year, we are just really needing peace, we don't want to get our hopes up, and maybe a late Christmas present from the Lord?? thoughts for our leadersRegardless of what you think of our president-elect, Christians are required to pray for our leaders. And with our economy continuing to fall, and foreign issues gaining speed, we must pray for him in his decision making process. He is being handed a horrible 'hand' and will be required to play those cards as if lives depended on it. That is a horrible position to be in and so much scrutiny is sure to follow. So let us pray for him in such a difficult place.
Romans 13:1-5 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. November 04 Christ has overcome the worldToday is Election Day. For many, it will be a day of tension, or even fear. The tension and fear will come from those who have much to lose after the election ends and new policies begin in the next few years. For me, the trepidation comes from losing those things I hold most dear. 1. Home schooling: I choose to home school my children. The public school system is hostile to the Gospel and God’s law. Children are taught young to stand in line, to behave the way the system wants them to behave, and they are quick to medicate the children who can’t fit inside the square hole provided by the school board. Even the ways they are taught basic things reflect an absence of God. So I home school my children so that they know from their earliest days that God made all the colors of their crayon box. That paper comes from the trees God planted from the beginning. And as they grow in their education, they copy bible verses for their handwriting time. I know God demands from me Godly children. And how can I do that if I am allowing someone else to ‘socialize’ and educate my children outside of God’s word. The worlds hates God, and hates the fact that the bible claims that only Christ and forgiveness through Him from your sins. There is nothing that we can do as fallen humans to save ourselves. So homeschooling is a natural thorn in the side of society. Most (not all) homeschoolers do so for religious reasons. And for that reason alone it will fall under the gun. 2. Abortion: millions of babies are murdered every year. And by murder, I mean that a heart, beating by God’s design and by His creative mind, is stopped by instrumentation. It is pre-meditated murder. I know of women who say their baby was tested positive for defects and therefore terminated. Human life is not on the same playing field as a warped plastic lid, to be tossed away when it becomes useless due to deformity. I also know how hard it is to raise and to deal with a handicapped child. There are two such families in our church. But those lives are still precious and serve a purpose, or God would not have allowed them to exist. My heart aches for those children. I have 4 kids because I believe that children are my inheritance from God, and that God will grant all I need while I raise them. And sure, it isn’t easy!! There are bad days and days when I would rather be doing ANYTHING else!! But they are still the only legacy I shall leave behind and most importantly, God will demand an accounting for what I do with them. The same goes for women who abort theirs because children ruin lives and women’s bodies. 3. Finance: as I stated before, we have 4 children, so our budget can be very tricky at times. We have lived our lives with financial sacrifice and are now having rewards for that wisdom. But so many people have chosen to live beyond their means, incur debt beyond their ability to pay that off. Now a crisis has hit, when those loans are being asked in repayment. Being responsible with our finances has gained us no reward in the societal structure. In fact, as tax payers we will be called upon to help repay all the foreclosures and failed credit markets. There are even college graduates who have fled the country to avoid repaying their 60K plus loans. Who pays that??? We do. The bible makes a distinction between the fools and their money, and the truly needy. My children go with me when we volunteer, we collect canned goods for the food bank, and my son does many tasks with his scout troop to clean up neighborhoods and local parks. It is necessary to help those in need and we are commanded by God to assist the widows and orphans. But we are not called to provide for an able bodies worker who profits more from NOT doing anything, waiting on their handout. I won’t be a doomsday type of person; I don’t think that there is a witch hunt out on the things I hold dear. I don’t believe (like some of my peers) that there will be forced sterilization, fees for extra children per house, all taxes will increase to 50% in every household, terrorism will find a home in the US, family values will disintegrate, and Christians will be enslaved. But I do believe that the three things I do hold dear will continue to get worse or my freedom will be removed from me. And for those reasons, I will pray today and keep my thoughts focused on God. He will grant me peace, and He will also put the next president in position. And God will be Glorified and be in complete control no matter who that is. So have peace, my friends. The Creator of the entire universe is still on His throne, seated at the right have of God.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 16:31-33 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” October 30 the hits keep on rollin'JJ contracted hand/foot/mouth disease, a virus that causes blisters to appear on his hands (pretty bad), his mouth (just a few), down his throat (doc said several) and his feet (again, not many). so we are putting whatever can go down his throat down. he is miserable and not sleeping for very long. he sucks his fingers for comfort (probably how he got this yuck) but is unable to with the large blisters on his hands, so he is just unhappy all day and all night. i would love prayers for our baby as he will suffer this for about a week, the doc said. October 28 truly trying week! This week has been one of those weeks that if I believed in voodoo I would swear that someone has a doll of me and is torturing it daily to see how quickly I can snap. Or if I believed in luck or such, I would think someone “walked over my grave” as they say.
Sunday Joshy was lying in bed snuggling with us around 0545 when he rolled over and rolled off my side of the bed. Our bed is high and Ben left one of his drawers open just enough… So I pulled Joshy back into bed with me and rolled over to ‘kiss’ his boo boo, I then noticed the wet spot on my pillow case. It was blood and he had cut his head well on the corner of the drawer. I cleaned it up after applying pressure only to be fairly certain it was going to need either stitches or staples. So off we traipse for more miles to be added to our ER card. Since it was hidden in his hair line, the doc chose not to stitch. But if it was on his face, they would have gone ahead with them. So add another scar to Joshy.
Monday When we arrived at Coop so that I can lead gym class early, for a change. By the time the first hour of class was well under way, JJ was proving to be rather fussy. Since he is a delightful child, I knew he was sick. A pal of mine noticed goopy stuff coming out of his ear, and I thought his double ear infection may have ruptured, which can happen. Thankfully, I have great friends at Coop who helped me with gym class since I was running around with a toddler clinging to me. My legs were smoked by that afternoon. JJ would not let me go. And the Ped office had no openings till Tuesday. So the wait was on and JJ was a ticking time bomb.
Tuesday Since this is my ‘faith building’ week, the night passed with JJ getting up several times in pain and NOT wanting to take medicine. Joshy had a nightmare, so the night was unbelievably short!!! We survived to the doc apt. JJ’s ears had not ruptured but they were not improving after the 10 days of antibiotics. So he got another round of that, and I got fussed at for not calling them sooner about his yeast infection. “But doc, I am here now talking to you about it and COULD NOT get in yesterday, so I want some grace here.”
So on to Wally world we go with a screaming toddler, handed off the RX request over the shrieking, purchased the couple necessary things (above the still screaming child) and got to see friends at Wally also and hopefully said pleasant things over the screaming child.
We make it home, all a live, mom is not totally nuts yet… then the can of pop falls from the hands of the 7yr old to BUST and spray all over the van interior.
At this point I truly had to hide away in my room for a bit to get my thoughts and emotions back in control. I believe in God and in His word given to be for my daily walk in faith. So I believe that there is nothing new under the sun. That every day is given of God. That He will not allow me to endure that which I cannot handle. God will give me the strength to endure when I feel faint. And He has given me fellow believers to lean on and to surround me in prayer when I need it. And this verse has been taped to my bathroom for a week now from my bible study and I had already chosen to memorize it before this week even happened. But boy did I need it this week!!!
Psalm 142:1-7 A MASKIL1 OF DAVID, WHEN HE WAS IN THE CAVE. A PRAYER. With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD. 2 I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. 3 When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me. 4 Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul. 5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." 6 Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low! Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me! 7 Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me. October 10 Tears shall flowThere are many tears to be shed here at the Duncan household. Our 1yr old boxer is heading to her new home Saturday mid-morning. The family is from New York and recently lost both their boxers to health issues. So they are bereft themselves but since they love and understand the boxer traits that have been harder for us to adapt to, they will be able to give her a better home. They have acres of land for her to run around and young children like ours to play with her.
It was a hard decision to make letting her go, but God opened a door for this family to adopt her quickly and with peace. We will be moving anywhere in the next 6 months to 9 months and Heidi brings in so much dirt that this will assist me in keeping the house ready for viewing when we place it for sale. For me a home is not a home without a fur-ball in it. So this will be a sad time for me without critter to shoo from under my feet, but it is better for her to go to this home. October 07 Tryaon PalaceAnother fabulous school field trip happened last weekend for the Duncan Family. October 4th was Homeschool Day at Tryon Palace. It was the site of the English Governer's Palace established by Gov. Tryon, sent from King George to the colony of the Carolinas. It was fascinating, the town of New Bern, NC. But of course, much of the house was not too interesting for the children. As I was walking around the kitchen of the palace thinking "how on earth would I manage in this kitchen???" The kids were poking at the food displayed and wondering if they could eat yet!
The gardens were phenominal. The house was large, and wonderful to tour through. I had to keep reminding myself and the kids that this era was still a British colony and ruled by a King across the sea. We did have fun, our hotel was a very good hotel, and the kids were pretty well behaved for the most part. We just have to keep in mind that a love of history takes time to grow and be cultivated. We find that we certainly push our wants and interests onto them, and they deal fairly well with this transference. But their attention spans are smaller and their activity levels are higher. So we might not be doing these sorts of historical field trips again for a year or two. But this was a wonderful town to visit as well. From the churches (the presbyterian church in New Bern was founded by a few of Jonathan Edwards children) and the school house were amazing. If only the walls could talk!! There was a doll in the child's room at the palace dated to the early/middle 17th century. Oh the stories that little toy could tell!!!!
Ben was able to get the drummer boy to play the call to chapel on the drum, so now his cell phone has the "call to chapel" for his ringer. It was amazing!!
September 30 Wind tossed, care wornSo with all the talk about the economy going bust, the fuel crisis, and the myriad of other things that can and will go wrong in this day and age, do we really have anything to cling to that is solid and will last??
I offer a suggestion to you: faith in an unchanging being. And that being is God. From the moment this world was created to now, He has been faithful and stable.
Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.
Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable.
And because God is faithful, because He is everlasting, there is immeasurable strength that He possesses. That strength is offered to us as we lean on Him for that strength.
Isaiah 40: 29-31 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has not might He increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
When we call upon the Lord as our rock, our shelter, our anchor, our harbor in the storms of life, He will deliver us upon dry land and wrap us in His merciful arms of safety.
Psalm 31:7-10 7 I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, 8 and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place. 9 Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. 10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.
God is the only one who is everlasting to everlasting, and He is the only being who will not and has not changed throughout time. He is the firm foundation. Have faith and cling to God for peace. Playin' in the waterwe love hiking and we finally got one of those back carriers for the youngest. so we are near unstoppable now. a few weeks ago we headed to a park near our home only to get half way through the hike and begin a 10 minute run in the sudden pouring rain to get back to the van. the kids had a blast getting soaked and speeding through the woods! but we did feel a bit un-fulfilled. so we tried again on a brighter, non cloudy day, in another park near the house. this one was a blast!! it has a river at the end of one trail with rocks to climb around on. the water was just up enough to be fun to wade around in, but low enough for many of the rocks to be showing. the kids loved it, the dog was not so impressed. but we were very impressed at her doe-like jumping capabilities!! we even tried to get her leaping on camera, but it was not fast enough to catch the gazelle. the kids had so much fun, though!!! September 06 we survived hannai guess you can say we survived hanna, but we really survived a constant rain storm lasting over 10 hours. it was amazing to watch the ditches FILL with water here in NC. but aside from that, we didn't get to see anything flying around.
but i continue to pray for the big one coming along. there are many who won't get to 'complain' about the wimpy effects of that storm. we are thankful for our rain. it was a blessing for this area. August 22 JJ plays ballI finally got JJ on video doing his adorable little ‘play ball’ thing. He started this all by himself and just giggles the whole time he does it. I just love watching this stage as they learn so much motor skills and hand-eye coordination!! back to the beachYou know, as a mid-west girl, the beach was never a place I wanted to go. It was never a place that drew me, calling to my like a long lost friend needing quality time. But it has become that while we live in North Carolina. My hubby is able to get a large room as the retreat leader for various retreats he conducts in Myrtle Beach. So we traipse along with him to be bums on the beach and to roll around in the surf.
This week he had another retreat for singles at Myrtle Beach and we drove down to meet him there for an overnight stay. We were on the beach in swimwear within 10 minutes of hitting the hotel and the kids got so sandy that we had to bath them after we came back in. This time Joshy enjoyed rolling around in the waves because the water was unbelievably warm!! JJ got his feet wet, but would have nothing to do with the water after it knocked him down once. The kids did learn valuable lessons about tide dragging; they kept getting pushed down the beach from where I was watching. Nothing dangerous, but a good lesson in beach survival. The waves were impressive with the tropical storm pounding the coast of Florida; the effects of it were visible as the surf crashed along the beach. But it was fun and so relaxing to sit on a balcony and listen to the ocean lap against the shore. We slept with the balcony door open and the kids slept like rocks!! It was great, and I do believe we shall miss this. |
